We love our Dams and for this reason, at times will not have puppies available. We purposely give our Dams long intervals between
breedings. They need this lapse to get their strength back. Pregnancy, whelping and lactating takes an immense amount of
energy, If Dams are bred too often they become weakened and are more susceptible to illness.
During and after whelping Dams become
very protective of their puppies and can be unpredictable. It is best to prepare a space for them away from high traffic areas allowing
them privacy. Unless the Dam knows you very well this is not the time to try to get acquainted. If you are not the Dams primary care
person do not try to handle the puppies. This holds true with all dogs. If you are not informed about breeding and whelping procedures
it is best left to the professionals. Breeding is not as simple as it sounds.
At Badgercrest we practice selective breeding to insure
the best possible qualities in our puppies. Selective breeding enables us to "breed out" undesirable traits. For instance if
our vet finds one of our dog has a hereditary issue. This dog would be sold on a spay / neuter contract at a lesser price and
the buyer would be made aware of what the findings were. This dog would not be used for breeding. Selective breeding also enables
us to "breed in" good traits. For example your Sire has a wonderful temperament and beautiful conformation however his mane and
plume are a bit on the sparse side. You have a Dam that is gorgeous and has a beautiful mane and plume. This would be a good way to
get babies with ample furnishings and the kind of temperament and conformation that is desired. These are just simple explainations
of selective breeding. Many choices are made in selective breeding to better the breed. While selective breeding can help to determine
health, beauty, temperament and conformation, there are no gaurantees. Nature can play some unfortunate tricks on even
the best breeders. A gorgeous and perfect mated pair can sometimes end up with undesirable puppies.
